I was raised inside of a solid brick house. I recall how nearby neighbors needed to paint their home just about every couple of years and we never did. Then sprang vinyl exterior siding that was resilient and in contrast to stucco, a person rarely ever had to paint it. Today, that look has evolved with possibilities such as hardi-plank, Cedar siding, Craneboard, and others.
